Goldfish

The goldfish, Carassius auratus, was one of the earliest fish to be domesticated, and is still one of the most commonly kept in water gardens.

A relatively small member of the carp family (which also includes the koi carp and the crucian carp), Goldfish may grow to a maximum length of 23 inches (59 cm) and a maximum weight of 9.9 pounds (4.5 kg), although this is rare; few goldfish reach even half this size. In optimal conditions, goldfish may live more than 20 years.

Shubunkin Pond Fish Profile

Shubunkin

The Shubunkin Goldfish has become a very popular pond fish since it is one of the toughest goldfish types.

The Shubunkin Goldfish is usually kept in ponds, but you can keep a Shubunkin Goldfish in an aquarium as well as long as you can provide it with enough space. The Shubunkin Goldfish can grow very large and an adult Shubunkin Goldfish will need at least 30-40 gallons of water, while a juvenile requires around 15 gallons. The aquarium or pond should be decorated and provide the Shubunkin Goldfish with heavily planted places as well as open areas for swimming.

Regardless of whether you keep your Shubunkin Goldfish in an aquarium or a pond, it is unadvisable to keep it together with slower swimming fish such as Telescope Goldfish or Bubble Eye Goldfish. The slower fishes might starve since the Shubunkin Goldfish will eat all the food before they have a chance to. A Koi is a much more suitable companion for a Shubunkin Goldfish.

Plecostomus

"One of the hardiest and most enduring of all catfishes, the Plecostomus is the most common catfish used for getting rid of problem algae in the pond and aquarium!

Even though they are herbivores they can get quite large. They love to hide under stone slab caves in the bottom of the pond. They are territorial and nocturnal."

Having a pond in the backyard has its own benefits. It makes you feel relaxed and calm, and it adds beauty to the landscape of your house. The whole ambience around your home is accentuated by a pond. Now having fish in that pond will do wonders to its aesthetics. The sight of beautiful and colorful fish swimming around in your pond is sure to take you to a new high. Apart from adding beauty, color and value a pond fish will also eliminate mosquitoes and unwanted algae from the pond.

A lot of varieties are available, yet not all are suitable to be used as pond fish. Therefore it is necessary to carefully decide on which variety is suitable in a pond. Some of the most common pond fish are:

  • Goldfish – no doubt the first fish we think of when thinking of a pond. They have been bred for centuries as hobby fish, so today there are numerous breeds of a goldfish. They are a good choice for small ponds since they are very friendly and mix well amongst each other. More common forms include the comets – with their long tails – and the gloriously multicolored shubunkins, who routinely grow to 15cm or more.

·         Koi fish and Carp – these fish can grow to 75 cm or more in length, so they are generally suitable for a larger pond. They are easily identifiable by their two pair of whiskers on the upper part of their mouth. They are known for their color and are found in single, dual and multicolor varieties. If properly cared for, their life can span between 35 years to 40 years.

·         Other Pond fish – This list includes names such as minnows, guppies, tropical fish, Catfish, Bluegill, Crappie and Bass. Generally very small fish cannot survive in ponds since they are unable to compete with the larger fish for food. While choosing any of these fish, you should keep in mind that each variety has its own set of favorable conditions. So decide only after taking into consideration all the aspects.
