Deciding on the fish food for your pond goldfish or koi might look like a simple task, but it is one of those crucial decisions which will decide the health and longevity of your fish. It is necessary to choose the type and quantity of food according to the requirements of the fish. Different varieties of fish require different varieties of food for proper nutrition, therefore it is imperative to carefully analyze the needs and requirements of your fish and choose the fish food accordingly.

Fish food can broadly be classified into 2 types:

    ·         Live food

    ·         Processed food

Live food includes plants, animals and microorganisms. They are an excellent source of proteins for the fish and are helpful to bring the fish in a breeding condition.

Processed food include fresh frozen, freeze dried and canned food. One of the main benefits of processed food is that they are specially prepared keeping in mind the requirements of your fish. Some processed foods also have added supplements like vitamin C, A D3, and E, to promote health, growth, and color.  Thus you can choose the one which suits your fish the best.

Apart from the fact that the food should be nutritious and adequate, it is also necessary that the food is properly dispersed to the koi or goldfish in the pond. Fish can either be top level feeders, mid level feeders or bottom feeders. Flakes are the most common type of fish food since they float first, and then sink to the bottom. Thus both top level and bottom level feeders can eat them. Floating pellets are another variety of food which is most commonly used. Pellets entice the fish to come to the top of the pond to eat, thus creating an aesthetically beautiful scene.

Koi are generally more active during the summers, as compared to the winters. Therefore in the winter, they need food which is easily digested, so a wheat germ diet is recommended. Koi food in the summer should contain more protein as compared to the food in winters, so fish can repair damaged tissues be ready for reproduction.

Lastly, it is important to control the quantity of fish food that you feed to your fish. Your goldfish or koi should be adequately fed, but over feeding can have negative consequences. In nature, fish will eat whenever something is fed to them. On the other hand, they might go hungry for a few days.  So fish are generally very opportunistic in nature. They will eat up any amount that is fed to them, irrespective of whether they are hungry or not. Overeating can cause harm to the fish, as well as to the general atmosphere in the pond due to the byproducts produced by the fish. Therefore it’s essential for you to limit the quantity of fish food which you feed to your fish.
